Weight loss question?
I have been working so hard for the past month to lose weight and it just isn't happening. I have been eating 1500-1800 calories a day, drinking tons of water, walking 30 minutes 3 or 4 times a week, and lifting weights nightly. I've also been taking phentermine as an aid in all this.

Well, at the beginning of my attempt at losing weight, I was at 158. Now I'm at 154 and have been for two weeks. Its pretty frustrating to be putting forth all this effort and not seeing my weight go down. Could my lifting weights seriously be keeping the scale from going down? I would be okay with that but it would seem to me that it would take a while for the muscle to replace the fat and that my weight should go down first before going up. And yes, I do feel better and I think I've gotten thinner but I might just be kidding myself.

How tall/big are you? 1500-1800 calories for a diet seems a lot.

I'm in the same boat as you! It just takes patience. I have lost 3lbs in 6 weeks. *sigh* My Dr. says you have to burn 3000 calories to lose a pound.
I am biking between 4 and 9 miles a day.
Just keep on pluggin away at it. It takes time.

Stay strong!

two notes:
1. I think the only option is that you're mis-calculating your daily calorie consumption. you should stick to 1500 tops and measure the calories more closely.
2. Instead of walking 30 minutes, walk 50 minutes.
only after 30 minutes the aerobic activity begines.

good luck

you should walk more often and lift weights less often. walk 30 minutes at least every day and lift weights 30 minutes a week. also, measure yourself weekly to see if you are losing inches and not weight. or use an article of clothing to see if you are getting smaller. 1800 calories does seem like a lot. use this calculator to see if that's a correct amount. and last but certainly not least, don't stress over it. that will make you retain calories.

First, forget the phentermine. It's not good for you! 2nd, I'm dieting with weight watchers, and I started out at 172 about 6 weeks ago. I'm eating 22 points which translates to 1100 calories. I'm exercising and I'm down to 153. I think you need to rethink your calories. Then, in order to be satisfied on so few calories, make sure you eat a lot of fiber rich foods, and lots of vegetables. Most vegetables (except high carb veggies like potatoes and carrots) are "free", and so you can fill up on them. Try a ratatouille for dinner. You spray a pan with cooking spray and saute diced onion, bell, pepper, eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, garlic, mushrooms, salt and pepper, and some italian seasoning, and then let it simmer for about an hour. Eat it alone for "free", or put it on top of pasta. It's my "go to" meal when I've eaten too much during the day, and don't have any calories to waste. Broth based soups are also very helpful. Good luck!

Did you lose 4 pounds over the span of 2 weeks? That's 2 pounds a week, then... perfectly healthy. If you feel better, then isn't that the point of weight loss?

You said that you think you got thinner, but might be kidding yourself. Start taking measurements. If you see these going down even if the scale doesn't reflect it, this might convince you that you are doing the right things.

It sucks, I know. When I lost weight, it tends to slip, then stick. I'll lose 2 pounds, then nothing for a month. Then, I'll lose 3 pounds, then nothing for 3 weeks. You just have to trust that diet and exercise will eventually get the job done. Your calorie range sounds fine for moderate weightloss, so don't worry about that too much. You may want to add additional exercise.

You are right - lifting weights does build body mass. But, more muscle makes your metabolism more efficient, so you burn more calories. (The phentermine doesn't do much - studies show that it only has a placebo effect. They even say you will only lose weight in combination with diet and exercise... so if the diet and exercise causes weightloss, what does the pill do?)

You are more than the number on the scale. If your goal is only to see a number on the scale, you will not keep the weight off. If your goal is to feel better, to be healthier, etc - then you lose weight as a by-product and will keep it off with a change in your lifestyle.
Good luck!
